Joomla is a content management system. A number of people might have used this type of CMS. Though I do not advise Joomla for those who want to make money and desire to get top ranking for their keywords. You can put it under PHPNuke category, but don’t trust Joomla sites. Because the whole system runs off of Index.php which is not good for your search engine optimization.

I have several clients that I had build .NET extensions to and the experience I had was terrible and tiresome. In fact if you create a site based on .NET technology, you get way better solution than the other one.

If you want to create a forum, or newsroom or membership area, then Joomla can be useful, because you create the whole system easy. Creating the navigation structure is effortless. In one condition that you understand and know how it works and have some knowledge of HTML.
You can put articles to expire after a time, activate dates, breadcrumbs, author name and so on. However there are some major seo problems with Joomla.

For those who do not have knowledge of web design and HTML, joomla has a big learning curve. The Javascript and CSS can get bulky. The load time is way too slow which does not match with Google’s standards today. As we all know Google emphasizes on speed and Joomla is not your choice if you want to get ranking. Joomla cost you money. The programming and development is clumsy and if you want to change you layout, you are in trouble. If you want to implement some plug ins you have to pay money.

The complexity of Joomla is its strong point and weakness. I wrote an article earlier about Joomla and its drawbacks which was published worldwide. I received many responses from people who have been using Joomla and admitted that the facts I pointed out were so true. As some of you may know Joomla was presented a few years ago back in 2005 and the developers of Joomla were able to make some decent money.

Although they are aware of the drawbacks of Joomla and present some plugins to correct the dysfunctionalities, but the problem are still there. Many who own joomla website were outranked because of the SEO problems. I know of the fact that some who received nice rage rank, with the changes that Google has done lately, these websites dropped their ranking. Some of those SEO-ers who have been working on Joomla websites know that ranking for a Joomla site may not be as easy as any other sites. In fact getting top ranking for these types of CMS sites is not easy.

I recommend the Joomla designers find way to enrich and optimize Joomla so that people who have built a website on Joomla can enjoy ranking as well.
For the time being WordPress sites can be the best choice, don’t you think so?

Overview:

Joomla is basically the new, competing version of Mambo. Several months ago the open source software development group split, with several of the original developers leaving Mambo to join the Joomla development system. As of now, Joomla and Mambo are very similar; in fact, almost identical. Most modules and components and templates that work with Mambo work almost perfectly with Joomla.
Joomla works well for medium to larger websites and is one of the best content management systems out there. It competes against the best, thus it is one of the best.

Advantages:

If you have used Mambo in the past, an advantage of using Joomla now is that you will basically not have to learn anything. Because Mambo and Joomla are so similar, little learning is needed in the translation. For non-Mambo users, Joomla has the same advantages that Mambo has; modules, components, and user accounts, as well as many other things. With these features you can set up allowances and restrictions to your users; ultimately, this gives you a very strict amount of control over your website. If you set it up this way, everything works as you’d like, and nothing will happen or be published that you don’t approve.

Disadvantages:

One possible disadvantage of Joomla is that it will be so different than Mambo. In a few years, Mambo and Joomla will continue to evolve, and one or the other will turn out to be the dominate one. However, we cannot know which one that will be at this time, so you must weigh both the risk and the advantages. Another disadvantage of Joomla is that it can be hard to get the hang of if you are new to the Joomla-Mambo software. In addition to this, Joomla, like Mambo, can be difficult to learn how to work when you are just starting. It’s hard to get it to work right in the beginning, disable certain features, and to make a template you like.

Best Uses:

Like Mambo, Joomla is bested use with moderate to larger websites. It does fine for smaller ones, but it can be a hassle to set up. It takes a long time to get the hang of using the software and configuring it to exactly what you want. It can be effective for certain tasks,

Platform:

Joomla is run on web hosting with PHP and a MySQL database.

Templates and Modification:

There are a decent amount of pre-made Joomla templates one can use from a stock website or customize. In addition to this, virtually every Mambo template that is out there will work almost perfectly with Joomla.

I’m using Joomla for the main website and WordPress for blogging. Both software were installed in the same server using two MySQL accounts. Joomla provide the best content management system I’ve seen in open-source software. As for now, I don’t think I should try other software to compare with its content management system. Somehow, one thing I don’t like about using Joomla is the SEO. Comparing to the WordPress blog, I am really not satisfied with my traffic to the main website (Joomla page) because I have not received any traffic from search engines to the Joomla site eventhough they are indexed but every articles in this WordPress blog got most of their readers from the search engines moments after they are published. I am still figuring if there are problems in my setting that might have causes this or I might need additional plug-ins or modules to overcome the problem.

Joomla was chosen for the main website because the content management system allow me to organize the contents with sections, categories, and manage their placement in the website. Modules are used in Joomla that are quite similar to widgets in WordPress. These modules can be placed anywhere on the website at predefined places such as right column, header, footer, or user defined locations. The standard mod_banner module allow banners or advertisements to be managed easily with option to limit the number of banners to appear. This allow you to have as many advertisement in the website but limit only some of them to appear at one time either randomly or by keywords related to articles. The mod_section module allow menus to be made automatically based on how many sections you are using in the websites. Front Page Manager in Joomla let users to specify whether an article is to be shown on the front page or only in their selected categories giving dynamic and organized feature to the website. Joomla main template use simple php and css coding allowing template modification to be made just on one file. This is quite similar to Blogger xml template as everything are in one single file.

Even though most of the standard feature are great, more add-ons or plugins are required to unleash the true potential a Joomla website. I’ve just installed a patch last night for my Joomla 1.5.9 version containing SEO fixes and still waiting to see what the patch can do for my website. There are a lot of add-ons for Joomla in the community websites but searching for the best and most helpful is quite a messy job.

WordPress is the ultimate blogging software ever. Even without any plugins, the software has already been optimised for search engines. Adding additional plugins will only boost the standard capability of the software. With so many webmasters creating their own plugins for WordPress, users should just browse the plugins database if they have any problems with their standard WordPress features. In WordPress, widgets can be placed anywhere but limited to areas predefined in the template. Some template only allow widgets on the sidebar while some allow widgets to be placed in the bottom section of the page. Comparing to Joomla template, WordPress uses many different files for each headers, post pages, sidebars, and footers. These files need to be modified seperately to modify blog appearance. The php coding used to links these files together could somehow confuse users especially to those whose not really good with php.

There are not much to say about WordPress since you can simply find the solution for any problem by browsing the plugins database. WordPress have the best SEO tools that will help to bring visitors within minutes. The only thing I don’t like is the content placement is really limited to templates or layouts. I don’t know if there is any WordPress template that allow widgets to be added to any part of the page such as header, footer, or sidebar as what you see in Blogger. Joomla have this feature only without the ability to drag and place the widgets (module) anywhere we want to.

Conclusion:

For organized contents and more corporate look, Joomla can be a good choice as you can choose to let an article to appear on the front page, in their categories or only to specified user category. You can also do this to modules and let only registered users to have access to some menu or contents. If you want to have the best blogging experience, use WordPress with a good template. After installing some top rated plugins, all you have to worry is what to write about in your blog. You can see why I used both software if you compare the articles in this blog to those in the main website. I also hope that the advantages of both softwares will help to popularize my website.

WordPress is basically a very user friendly blog system but it can be used as a regular site which you can update without any knowledge of html (the same goes for Joomla). You can create pages and posts, and with plugins, you can add a lot of functionality included standard in Joomla, except that all code is web standard. And because WordPress is web standard, Google really loves it. So, from a marketing standpoint, WordPress is hard to resist.

The interface is easy to understand, you won’t need a book for it, although buying a “WordPress for Dummies” – book will save you some time if you have no experience with blog management at all. Adapting the look requires some knowledge of CSS, the style sheet language. Like with Joomla, if you select a template close to what you want, adapting the colors, logo etc.. is not that complicated but if you do not want to get involved with CSS, and you would like to re-arrange navigation elements as well, you might consider hiring a web developer. Since WordPress has a logical structure, it is easy for a developer to change things around, place ad banners etc…Again, give preference to a specialized developer used to work with WordPress.

It is setup very quickly and you can be listed in Google within 2 days. I haven’t seen any other system doing that so far. A normal site takes up to 2 months to get listed in Google, so this is something to take into account. Anybody can learn enough in 2 hours to create content with WordPress right away, including using categories and sub pages.

WordPress can handle tons of visitors. It will not break down easily.

Disadvantages of WordPress:

For instance, adding or removing post dates, need to be changed in design mode and it requires knowledge of WP scripting. The navigational structure is determined by the layout template you chose. Changing that structure again requires knowledge of the WP scripting language and CSS. With Joomla, you do not run into this problem because menus are controlled via the control panel and attributes like dates, author name etc, can be turned on and off per article or for the whole site in one go. In that sense, Joomla is much more a content management system.

Also, changing the order of categories or pages is rather cumbersome in Wordpress. It involves having to go into all of the categories and change the order by hand. The WP developers are working on it to fix it, but when is unpredictable.

In short:

WordPress is simple, you can see it as a blog or as a regular website. It has fixed pages, posts and categories.
Through the use of plugins you can extend its functionality and let it grow as big and complicated as you want. However, not every plugin is easy to understand, so it might be a good idea to have a specialized web developer in case of emergencies.

If you want to create a community or a network with a membership area, newsroom, forums, articles, input from external authors etc… then Joomla is a good choice because it is made to be that way. Creating a navigation structure is easy, once you understand how it works and it doesn’t require knowledge of html. You can set articles to expire after a time, activate dates, authorname, breadcrumbs etc.. Thus, Joomla gives you a lot of power in your hands and that is noticeable in the admin section where there are so many options that you get dizzy the first time you go in. You really should get a good book on Joomla if you want to set it up fast. Otherwise you end up fiddling around and getting nowhere for days. A reasonably good starter is “Beginning Joomla” from Dan Rahmel. It guides you by the hand while customizing the site and setting up the naviagation structure. There are other books, but I cannot recommend them since I didn’t read them.

Adapting the look is simple if you are happy with changing some colors and the logo. Beyond that, you will find that Joomla has a complicated structure and even seasoned web developers have to go through a learning curve before they master the layout system, and that approach is different depending on the layout template you chose.

If you do not want to get involved in the gritty work of stylesheets, you can buy professional layout templates for a reasonable price (between $35-$50) from JoomlaShack, for instance. Or you could ask a developer to do it for you, but make sure they have references of Joomla sites or you might end up paying their learning curve and that is what you want to avoid.

Disadvantages of Joomla
The disadvantage of Joomla, and the producers know that, is the way code is generated. Joomla has to use tables to build its layout and that means that Joomla code is non web standard and the god of search engines, Google, is not happy about non web standard code. Yet, it will list your site anyway. There will be a time when this method is phased out and they work hard on it, but it cannot be done right now. No longer a true issue since Ryan commented and proved below that he created a real table-less template, so it can be done. I just haven’t found a truly table-less commercial template for sale yet. I bought several and they still have a couple of tables. But I presume we will see real table-less templates popping up everywhere soon, and then I will be able to remove this issue as a disadvantage. Thanks again for pointing this out, Ryan.

A remaining problem is that the core system is very complex which demands a lot of resources from the server. If the database is not tweaked for better performance and you add a couple of fancy external plugins, chances are that the site breaks down starting from 50,000 visitors a day or more.
If you are born to be very popular on the net, it is important to keep this in mind, therefore best involve a webdeveloper with experience in high traffic sites to tweak the system.

In short:
Joomla’s strenght is in complexity. Deep level navigation, sections in sections, categories etc… It has fixed pages and posts, posts Great for community sites, you can create a regular site with it but I would regard that as overkill.

Shortly, content is king. I agree with that, with some considering points. Although content is the king, but without good looking site, i will be just ignored. Why ? because people see website how it looks, in stead of contents it has. So, if you build website with good content but without good design, i think visitor will just assume that you are not seriously with your website. Professionally created website include good design, good content, good maintenance, good service. To create professional websites requires professional people behind them.

Unfortunately, not all people in a company or organization can create good web design. For such company or organizations, i suggest you to contact web design service provider company. The company specializes on planning, designing, developing, and also giving maintenance service for website development. You must pay with reasonable price according to complexity of website you order.

In recent days, outsourcing is the best way to reduce cost and to get best result. For companies which core business is not website design, usually they do not have enough man power in website development. If this company develops website internally, the result tends to be low quality but with much effort. In order to get high quality and less effort, i recommend them to call web design company. I am sure you will get the best result with less effort.

If you have been contemplating whether a Joomla-based website is right for you, you may want to check out Joomla’s “Absolute Beginner’s Guide to Joomla.” Much of the information found in the rest of this post will be condensed from this informative web page, so if you desire more in depth knowledge, visit Joomla’s site.

One nice feature that Joomla allows you to do is take a “test drive” with their system. They let you go to a demonstration site, sign in as a backend Administrator, and change some options to see what an end product will look like. This feature helps you to get familiar with the content management system so that you can test out whether it is something that would be right for the needs of your own web site.

Joomla recommends something that you should do no matter what system you use to manage your website, and that is to plan in advance. You will want to look at the big picture. Joomla poses 4 questions that may help you to do this:

* What do you want to accomplish with your website?

* What is the nature and quantity of content you wish to present?

* Who is your audience, and how do you want to interact with them?

* What types of budgets or timetables are you working within?

Regarding any of these 4 questions, the last thing you want to do is get “web site happy” and go in without a plan. You will end up spending a great deal more money than you would had you simply sat down and focused on the answers to these questions.

So, unless you already know somebody who has explained how Joomla has benefitted their own web site, you are probably asking yourself “What can Joomla do for me?” Joomla allows the user to:

* Edit the content of every page of your site through a word processor-style interface.

* Add new pages to your site using a point-and-click interface.

* Add images and other media through Web-based uploads.

* Control site elements like navigation menus and page layout.

These are only a few of the features you will get with Joomla’s Content Management System. The company makes it beyond easy to create and manage your web site. You do not need a web site designer at your disposal to have the kind of web site you see other companies have. In fact, there is a good chance that the other sites you see from various companies are managed through someone using the Joomla system.

Although Joomla does use the PHP programming language within its system, as a user you do not need to know and understand this language to install it and create the web site in the way you want.

Because there is much to relate in regards to the Joomla Content Management System, we will continue with this topic through future posts. In the meantime, it may be helpful to spend a bit of time focusing on the 4 questions above to get an idea of what you want from your web site.

More and more companies whether it is new or experienced companies are completing their facility with website. Are they only following the online phenomenon or they really need a website to develop their business? This question becomes a common question for new or small companies as well. They always think whether they need a website or not. Well, if people said that building a website is just aimed to follow trend, then the assumption is completely wrong because the website can be very helpful on creating branding, build positive image, and even increase the selling point. Therefore, the second statement is more correct, companies need a website to develop or even run their companies. Now what about small business or home based business that only has two or three employees? Do small business like this is able to get the benefit from building a website because as we all know, it needs a great effort to build a good website with good traffic as well and it will need a budget.

Small business even, a business that ran by one person need a website. Numerous benefits can be reached form making a website. The website is helping small business to reach the customers. As we all know, today’s people are counting on local search, search engine, business directory and even blog to find the service or product they need. What if the small business does not have a website? Then I can 100% sure that online searcher will not be able to find this small business. Making a website is so easy and simple and we can even find the free website building service as well, so there is no reason related to budget on making a website. Free website can look as professional as paid website as well, so make sure to use the experienced web designer, such as web design services london.

With small business existence on online world, then selling point will be increasing slowly but sure. If small business owner need to pump the visibility on online world like a rocket, then using SEO service is a mandatory thing. There are so many SEO service on the internet that we can choose. Budgeted SEO services are available as well. If we are small business owner who have no idea about website design, SEO, squidoo, and even how to choose a good website builder, we can find those information online in an instant. Therefore, why do people still asking if website can be beneficial for them or not if website has become a mandatory thing in this sophisticated world?
