A leading security researcher has warned that Google risks repeating Apple’s mistakes on security with its new Chrome OS.

Google Chrome OS is a Linux-based operating system designed to work exclusively with web applications. Chrome netbooks running the new OS will be available from Google’s partners Samsung and Acer from June. In a launch announcement, Google boasted of an end to patching and anti-virus updates woes.

Chromebooks have many layers of security built in so there is no anti-virus software to buy and maintain. Even more importantly, you won’t spend hours fighting your computer to set it up and keep it up to date.

Rik Ferguson, a security consultant at Trend Micro, criticised this line as marketing rhetoric. Google risks repeating the security mistakes of Apple, he warns.

Security features of Chrome OS include process sandboxing (so any app is unable to interfere with other apps on a system), automatic updating and a reversion to the last known good state if any problems are detected. This latter feature is possible because user files are stored in the cloud (and encrypted), with only system files held locally.

In addition, every application in Chrome OS will run inside the browser, with only (sandboxes) browser plug-ins running locally.

However this sterile environment is unlikely to last long, not least because Google has created a a Software Development Kit that allows the creation of Chrome “native apps”, according to Ferguson, who reckons this open the door towards the creation of malware.

Sandboxing technology ought to prevent any bad apps that are created getting out of their play pen. But Ferguson warns that sandboxing technology is no panacea for security woes.

“Exploits that break out of sandboxing have already been demonstrated for Internet Explorer, for Java, for Google Android and of course for the Chrome browser (to name but a few), while the Google sandbox is effective, it is not impenetrable and to rely on it for 100 per cent security would be short-sighted,” he said.

Rebooting laptops and storing data in the cloud is just “moving the goalposts” for scammers, Ferguson further argues. Instead of stealing data on a compromised device, the motivation will shift towards swiping authentication keys. “If I can infect you for one session and steal your keys, well then I’ll get what I can while I’m in there and then continue accessing your stuff in the cloud; after all I’ve got your keys now, I don’t need your PC anymore,” Ferguson writes.

Ferguson praises Google for its engineering work but questions its apparent suggestion that switching OSes is a “silver bullet” capable of killing off the modern myriad of security woes. He draws a comparison between Google’s claim that Chrome needs no anti-virus and similar claims in the past by Apple.

In this article, I will tell you 2 major benefits of using Google Chrome 6.

To use this browser, all you need to do now is to download it from its official website. If you don’t have any ideas on how to find that official website, open any search engine and, type ‘download Google chrome’ into the search box of any search engine.

If you open up Google Search home page via Internet Explorer 7, Internet Explorer will suggest you to download this browser from its top right corner.

I am a happy Google Chrome user.

Why? I gives me faster speed when opening various web page, blogs, news, videos. I don’t mind the simple design this browser has, as long as it is fast. Let me share you 2 major benefits of using it.

Benefits #1: Launches fast, opens up website quickly.

You can compare the speed of launching this browser and Mozilla Firefox 3.6. You will see that it launches faster. Try open any website such as YouTube, Wikipedia, Facebook or Twitter.

Benefits #2: Protects you from online virus threats.

Most computer virus, runs widely via the internet. These kind of virus programmed to infect computers via Internet Explorer by default.

When you use this browser to surf the internet, it will protect you from malware infections and phishing threats by a built-in web security function.

To enable this security function, click to Options, go to ‘Under The Hood’ tab and click on a box tagged with ‘Enable phishing and malware protection’.

I cannot prevent you from using internet browser software of your choice.

All browsers has their own strength and weakness.

For Google Chrome, its weakness is in lack of usefull add-ons, minimal design, minimal function and minimal web security protection if compared to Mozilla Firefox 3.6. On the other side, Google Chrome is still a new browser that needs to be improved.

If you want to know which browser is the best among Internet Explorer 7, Mozilla Firefox 3.6 or Google Chrome, I would prefer Firefox.

If you prefer speed to read any webpage on the web, I recommend you to use Google Chrome.

Google Chrome is one of the popular internet browser used by mobile broadband user due to attractive and easy to use. Bakrie Connectivity with their new mobile broadband service called AHA launched broadband modem which integrated Google Chrome inside the modem. With the Google chrome browser inside the AHA modem, mobile broadband user can browse with this browser as the default browser. Moreover, AHA modem did not require to be installed manually by mobile broadband user while they want to surf EVDO service from Bakrie Connectivity

There are many internet browser technology can be used by mobile broadband subscribers while they want to surf on internet.
The European Commission today launched a formal investigation into Google following allegations that the internet giant has abused its dominant position in the search and advertising market.

Google is facing an EU anti-trust investigation following complaints from rivals about “unfavourable treatment” of their search services within the search engine giant’s “natural” unpaid as well as sponsored listings.

Complainants, including Microsoft and UK firm Foundem, which is also involved in a US inquiry into Google, allege the company gives “preferential placement” to its own services. The complainants allege that Google unfairly “lowers the ranking” of unpaid search results of some services, such as price comparison websites, in a bid to “shut out competing services”.

In addition the probe will look at allegations that Google imposes “exclusivity obligations” on advertising partners preventing them from placing “certain types of competing ads on their web sites”.

“This initiation of proceedings does not imply that the Commission has proof of any infringements,” said the Commission. “It only signifies that the Commission will conduct an in-depth investigation of the case as a matter of priority.”

Google refuted the accusations but admitted that there is “always going to be room for improvement” and pledged to work with the Commission.

“Since we started Google we have worked hard to do the right thing by our users and our industry, ensuring that ads are always clearly marked, making it easy for users to take their data with them when they switch services and investing heavily in open source projects,” said a Google spokesman.

“But there’s always going to be room for improvement, and so we’ll be working with the Commission to address any concerns.”

In September regulators in Texas launched the first broad anti-trust review of Google’s search and advertising practices in the US. While federal regulators in Washington have investigated the impact on competition of Google’s business deals in the past, Greg Abbott, Texas attorney general, is the first regulator to look more broadly at its core search business, amid growing concerns about the power the online business wields.

Getting the Commission to quiz Google is a victory for firms such as Foundem, which has complained for years that the vagaries of its search algorithm have huge consequences for the number of visitors to its website, which compares the prices of anything from flights to microwave ovens.

Google has updated the Mac version of the Chrome browser to version 5.0.307.7. Google Chrome Beta for Mac 5.0.307.7 comes with the following new features: extensions, bookmark sync, bookmark manager, cookie manager and task manager.

Windows users have been able to take advantage of Chrome extensions ever since the final, stable version of Chrome 4.0 was released late this January. Extensions, as Product Manager with Google, Nick Baum explained at the time, are “little programs, created by developers, which add useful functionality to the browser and to the websites you visit.” Extensions are to Chrome what add-ons are to Firefox – hope that clears things up for you.

<ins><ins></ins></ins>

With the launch of Google Chrome Beta for Mac 5.0.307.7, Mac OS X users can now enjoy extensions just like Windows users have been for a month now. There are more than 2200 extensions in the Chrome extensions gallery for you to try out.

Another feature that Windows users have been enjoying for a while is bookmark sync. Now Mac OS X users can take advantage of this feature as well. Bookmark sync is meant for the Chrome user that frequently changes computers. For example the person that uses Chrome at the office, at home, and at his girlfriend’s house. Keeping all the bookmarks synchronized could prove to be a daunting task. But it is a piece of cake thanks to the bookmark sync feature.

To celebrate the release of Google Chrome Beta for Mac 5.0.307.7, a funny little poem has been posted by Software Engineer with Google Chrome, Mark Mentovai. Here it is:

The last time we put on a show
was just over two months ago.
We polished our Chrome
for Mac! It’s at home
on anyone’s MacBook or Pro.

It’s fast, and of course, we ensure
the browser will stay more secure.
But some wrote a letter–
they wanted it better!
So clearly it had to mature.

Today, we are happy to mention
on Mac, you can use that extension!
And bookmark sync too,
plus, there’s more for you
and if I still have your attention:

For everyone who are going to install Google chrome browser for those pleasing addons/extensions but have no idea on how to integrate them on your chrome browser can check out this simple tutorial.

The latest Google chrome extensions are available for download but won’t work on 3.0 Google chrome browser. So, as a fix Google wants you to install the beta version of Google chrome browser which extends the support for addons.

Note: This installation steps are for windows/linux users only. The Mac Chrome browser doesn’t support Chrome addons.

Install Google Chrome Addons on Chrome Browser

First step is to check this page https://chrome.google.com/extensions, and see if the install button works on your chrome browser. If it doesn’t then your chrome browser doesn’t support addons. Hence, uninstall it by visiting the control panel –> Add/remove programs and remove ‘Google chrome’ or you can use free programs like ccleaner to delete the installed Google chrome browser.

Now, go to this page http://www.google.com/landing/chrome/beta/ and again download the Google chrome beta channel. The installation is fast and you will be able to add extensions.

Re-visit the Chrome extension page https://chrome.google.com/extensions – Now you will be able to install any Chrome addons without the need to restart the browser. Here are the screenshot.. add chrome addons How to Install Google Chrome Addons/Extension on Chrome

There are wide variety of addons available for Google chrome now! They are growing super fast and are already downloaded by thousands of people within a day..

So go ahead and install addons for your Google chrome! (I am liking it already) Also check out these http://blogote.com/2009/google-technology/awesome-google-chrome-experiments-for-chrome-browser.html to experience awesome Google chrome experiments.

In this post I will be talking about the best adblocking addons extensions for Google chrome. As you know, Google rolled out the new extension features that works just like Firefox and as similar to adblock+ for Firefox we have Adblock for Chrome browser too!

Some Chrome adblock addons are still in the development stage whereas others are already working flawlessly. So, without further ado let me review all the popular and the best adblock extensions to block ads on Chrome:

- AdThwart Adblocker for Chrome

What it does: Adthwart addon is an typical adblocking extension that reduces the number of ads seen on webpages by blocking them. Although the addon is still in it’s primitive state but has been already downloaded 35000 times.

Works? Sadly, the devilish icon laughs at you without blocking the ads.. Yes, it didn’t work for me! But the future updates include easylist that allows you to filter advertisements from online websites. So keep an eye on this upcoming adblocker.. Rating 2/5.

- Adsweep Adblock for Chrome

What it does: Adsweep was already an alternate way to block ads from webpages on Safari, opera and Chrome but now they have released an official addon to block ads on Google chrome. The only best adblock extension available for Chrome browser that is really working. Download Adsweep

Works? YES! But I can’t find an icon to disable it I am still playing with it though. It blocks most of the advertisements on the website and luckily it’s the only working Chrome adblocker. Oh yeah, it doesn’t block inline advertisements. Rating 3.5/5

Other adblockers extensions?

I checked the chrome extensions gallery which have some extensions like block Flash (doesn’t work), Facebook adblock and I believe more sophisticated addons for blocking ads are on there way for chrome browser. So stick around by subscribing to our feeds.

And, If you are looking for bookmarklets then check out this post which has the adblock+ for chrome bookmarklet. Add it to your chrome browser and block most of the adverts!

Chrome was a built from the ground up by Google to incorporate all the best attributes of everyone’s favorite Internet activities. Even though its still in Beta, its a smooth and well refined tool for browsing the Internet. Since I am a complete Firefox freak, I found myself comparing Chrome to Firefox and I must say that I liked it very much.

The Chrome browser itself was designed similar to the Google Homepage in that its very simple to use and extremely fast and responsive. Here’s a list of what I really dig about the Chrome browser:

One box for everything

In Google Chrome, you can get anywhere on the Web with one box. The address bar that sits at the top of the normal GoogleChrome window simplifies your Internet experience by doubling as a search box. You can also use it to bookmark websites and stay aware about the security of a website.

New Tab page

Every time you open a new tab, you’ll see a visual sampling of your most visited sites, most used search engines, and recently bookmarked pages and closed tabs

Application shortcuts

Use web apps without opening your browser. Application shortcuts can directly load your favorite online apps.

Dynamic tabs

You can drag tabs out of the browser to create new windows, gather multiple tabs into one window or arrange your tabs however you wish — quickly and easily.

Crash control

Every tab you’re using is run independently in the browser, so if one app crashes it won’t take anything else down.

Incognito mode

Don’t want pages you visit to show up in your web history? Choose incognito mode for private browsing.

Safe browsing

Google Chrome displays this warning if the web address listed in the certificate doesn’t match the address of the website Google Chrome is attempting to access.

Instant bookmarks

Want to bookmark a web page? Just click the star icon at the left edge of the address bar and you’re done.

Importing Settings

When you switch to Google Chrome, you can pick up where you left off with all the bookmarks and passwords from your existing browser.

Simpler downloads

When you download a file from a website, the downloads bar appears at the bottom of the tab where you can monitor the progress of your downloading file. The file button indicates the size of the download and the amount of time remaining until the completion of the download. An arrow appears in the tab to signify a download in progress.

More and more friends tend to hold the idea that Chrome will be a winer in the future and it is a wise choice to swtich to Chrome from Firefox. But in my opinion, if you have accustomed to using Firefox, it is difficult to switch to Chrome. Here are 5 reasons why I won’t be switching from Firefox to Google Chrome as my default browser in the foreseeable future:

google-chrome-vs-mozilla-firefoxExtensions- I know this is “in the works” for Google Chrome, but I can’t ditch Firefox just yet. I have a must set of extensions for every install of Firefox I ever make. I used to keep an updated list of such extensions, but I haven’t updated in a while. Maybe I should do so. But, on every install, I need AdBlock Plus, FoxyProxy, FireFTP, Firebug, Web Developer, Tab Mix Plus, Weave, NoScript and Flashblock, just to name a few. Again, I understand it’s only a matter of time with Chrome before extensions appear, and they will sand-boxed too, increasing the stability and security of the browser. However, Chrome isn’t there yet, and as such, Firefox remains my browser.

Caching- Firefox is the only browser that I know of that gets caching right. If, for any reason, my browser crashes, and I was typing an email, when I pull the browser back up, not only are my tabs restored, but the data in the tabs as well, including each tab history, and the text in any form fields that I was editing (provided I’m keeping a history of everything, as is default on a new install). I can’t even begin to tell you how valuable this feature is. Yes, the whole browser crashes with Firefox, versus single tabs with Chrome, but when Firefox comes up, my data is in tact. When I restore the tab with Chrome, form fields and text boxes that were once populated are now blank.

Cross Platform- Even though I have Google Chrome installed on my Debian and Ubuntu machines, Google Chrome is still very much a Windows application. It just hasn’t reached prime time for Mac OS X or GNU/Linux. So, unless I’m ready and willing to take the rolls with the punches, I’m stuck on Windows. Yes, Google Chrome is getting more and more usable every day on GNU/Linux, but it’s still unstable and comes with bugs.

Portable Firefox- Being a college student, I’ve come to love Portableapps.com. I can take so many applications with me on a USB stick, plug them into a Windows machine at school, and off I go. Firefox is no exception. I can have all my extensions, plugins, settings, bookmarks and so forth with me on a single USB stick. This way, I don’t have to worry about installing Firefox should it not be installed, and I don’t have to prep it installing and configuring it the way I like. So, until Chrome becomes a portable app as well, which I don’t think should take long, Firefox is here to stay.

Speed- Firefox is still a fast browser, and 3.6 is looking to up the ante even more. Tracemonkey is comparable to speed with V8 in terms of JavaScript engines, and HTML/CSS rendering is also snappy. In fact, I noticed a great improvement from 3.0 to 3.5 in terms of speed. And when browsing the sites I do from day-to-day with Firefox and Chrome, I honestly can’t tell if one is faster than the other. Yes, from a cold boot, Firefox is a second slower. Maybe two. Other than that, IMO, it’s neck and neck, and as a result, I see no reason to switch browsers if speed is a factor.
